Governor, Orgs. mourn death of Sharmila
ITANAGAR, Apr 8: The Governor of Arunachal Pradesh General (Retd) JJ Singh has expressed shock and grief over the untimely demise of Takam Sharmila, who lost her life in a tragic road accident near Shillong yesterday. Sharmila was working as an Assistant in the Governor’s Secretariat.
In his condolence message to Gora Makik, husband of Late Sharmila, the Governor said that “Sharmila was not only a sincere and diligent member of the Raj Bhavan family but also a kind hearted woman”.
The Governor, who met the members of the bereaved family at the official residence of Late Sharmila, offered heartfelt condolences and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul. The Governor also prayed for early recovery of the Miss Reshmi and Master Gungte, who were injured in the unfortunate accident.
A condolence meeting was held at the Governor’s Secretariat.
Secretary to Governor Ankur Garg, who visited the injured children at Guwahati Medical College, and other officials offered prayer for eternal peace of the departed soul.
The All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU), Students’ Union of Dera Natung Government College and National Students Union of India (NSUI) state unit expressed grief and sorrow over premature demise of Sharmila, wife of Gora Makik, a native of Palin village under Kurung Kumey district in tragic accident at Nang about 45 km off Guwahati.

“Sharmila’s death is an irreplaceable loss for the women folk and the entire state as well. Her contributions towards AAPSU and the state will always be remembered,” AAPSU said in a release and prayed for the peace of departed soul. It also conveyed heartfelt condolence to bereaved family to bear the irreparable loss.
Meanwhile, the AAPSU President Kamta Lapung and DNGCSU appreciated the service and prompt action taken by the team of Arunachal Students’ Union Shillong (ASUS) headed by its president Aga Taku in bringing the mortal remains of Sharmila to the state capital, Itanagar.
Arunachal Christian Forum (ACF), in its condolence message, said that the premature demise of Sharmila has saddened everyone. ACF conveyed its heartfelt condolence to the bereaved family and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul.
Expressing shock over sudden demise of Sharmila, All Nyishi Students’ Union (ANSU) in a condolence message said that she was very much active in social work and led many movements for the welfare of people of the state during her tenure in AAPSU as its women wing president.
“May almighty rest her soul in peace and give strength to her family in this hour of grief,” ANSU prayed.
While expressing grief and sorrow over untimely demise of Sharmila, ALSU in a condolence message said that she will always be remembered for her contributions towards the student community.
“May her soul rest in peace and God grant enough strength to the members of the bereaved family to overcome these trying times,” ALSU said in a message.
Shocked at sudden demise of Sharmila, Nyishi Nyem Acham (NNA), said that in her death NNA has lost a kind and spirited soul.
NNA prayed almighty to rest her soul in eternal peace and give courage to her family members to cope with the tragedy.
NNA also prayed for early recovery of her daughter and son, who are undergoing treatment in Guwahati.

Dr. Doley in his address stated that while other literatures have made tremendous progress in the country the Adi and Mishing languages with their common heritage and origin have lagged behind because of lack of initiative in written literature though the language is more than thousand years old. Describing various challenges in the way of developing its written literature especially problem in script issues and inadequate resources, Doley called upon members of both the communities to strive for preservation and promotion of the language. Earlier, Tapang Taloh, Director School Education said it was a joyous time for all that due to the efforts of AAK, the percentage of young scholars participating in the field has been increasing over the years. Development of Adi language and literature is collective responsibilities of all members of the society, he further added. Improvement of text books and proper implementation in schools requires proper application of planning and efforts. He stressed on research and documentation of language for its promotion. He also suggested the text books should be written and screened by experts and competent authority.
The AAK President Nini Pertin in his presidential address stated that traditional merrymaking and rituals can not be separated. He suggested to accepting easy alphabets to read and write in Adi language so that it could be easily propagated in the society.
General Secretary of AAK Obang Tayeng extended his thanks to all the attending personalities and Maktil Apum and Taring Tabi in particular for their assistance and hard works.
In his valedictory speech Tayeng highlighted various initiatives taken by AAK including introduction of text books in schools, publication of magazines and holding meetings to promote Adi language. Significantly, entire tribal groups of Arunachal bear the same routes of origin and migration. So despite keeping a community diversity, we need to develop a common Arunachali identity shared through dance, song, dress and even one link language for all."
Dr. Bath felt that a festival like Panorama should be put forward in every corner of the state to display the diversity, and yet celebrating its unity. He also said that while this unity was very critical for the fruits of development to percolate down to the people, it must at the same time not be divisive and must not displace communities.
Editor of Arunachal Front and one of the pioneers of the media in the State, Pradeep Kumar said that the notion of a pan Arunachal identity is not mythical, but rather a reality. What needs to be done is for the youth of the State to come forward and actively uphold this by way of knowing each other better and respecting our diversity.

A unique awareness prog for parents
ITANAGAR, Apr 8: About 100 parents and students gathered at Anchal Samity Hall, Roing on Sunday to take part in the awareness programme ‘Parental Awareness and Children’s Education in Mishmi Society’ organized by Mishmi Scholars Association (MSA) in collaboration with Enjalumenda Women’s Empowerment Forum (EMWEF).
The programme which aimed at raising awareness on parent’s role in children’s education and motivating the parent as primary stakeholder in building of a society was prompted by the growing concern over lack of educational progress in the Mishmi society.
Participating in the event Radhilu Chai, Vice Chairperson, Arunachal Pradesh State Women’s Commission (APSCW) observed that “This is the first time I am ever attending a seminar on parenting in our tribal society.”
Considering the paramount role mothers play in child’s growth, she said the tribal society must encourage women to inherit parent’s immovable properties and called for family and societal support. She also encouraged the organizers to work towards a common platform for all Mishmis.

There was a time, when our parents were illiterate and concerned about our education. Today we are educated and again concerned about our child’s education.”
Having observed children being sent to different boarding schools in futile effort by parents in search for good quality education, he said “The belief is that sending children to good school will bring better education. But what parents forget is that it is they who can make all the difference,” he said and added, “Teachers can never be a substitute to a parent.”
Earlier, in his opening speech, Sokhep Kri, Chairperson, MSA and State Editor, Arunachal Gazeteer said, “The dawn of modern education in Mishmi society started very late. It began with a school in Chidu, Lower Dibang Valley district in 1950. We were deprived of education from early days. ”
“Therefore to have sense of the past and to plan accordingly for the future, we have to dwell on the issues and problems in the community,” he said.
The discussion in the seminar cum awareness programme began with the topic ‘Current challenges and issues of parenting’ by Rakhi Linggi, Secretary, EMWEF. She outlined three main issues – sex education for children, drug abuse and lack of genial ambience for child’s growth.
Speaking on the subject ‘Parental involvement in home’, Krishma Pulu, member, EMWEF said parents must inculcate sacrificial attitude. “Children learn from our deeds and not from words.”
Dr Rama Tewari of Art of Living (AoL) speaking on the topic ‘Spiritual education: A child’s right’ said that as a spiritual being, children are also capable of empathy and understanding the spiritual dimension. “Their creativity should not be killed by trying to make them what they are not. The ultimate goal in a child’s life should be happiness.”
While speaking on the topic ‘Parents role in child’s education,’ Dr Manaya Mena, Chairperson, EMWEF said, “Parents cannot escape from their duty by sending off them to a hostel. They need our care. If we send our children to hostel when they need us, then they will send us to old age home when we need them.”
The awareness programme felicitated Dibili Miuli, Emme Mihu and Sole Mickrow recognizing them as successful parent and for being an ideal to their children and to the Mishmi society. They were awarded with an appreciation letter, a Mishmi shawl and cash prize. All three achievers share similar background of being uneducated and from interior villages and had raised their children in difficult circumstances.

ROING, Apr 8: The 5th Annual General Meeting of Arunachal Baptist Church Council (ABCC) was held at Baptist Church, Rayang. It was hosted by Dibang Lohit Baptist Churches Association (DLBCA) from April 5 to 7.
Programme Manager Noah Ngukir reported that around 718 delegates representing 17 member associations of the council gathered with the theme ‘Rooted and built up in Christ.’
ABCC is the apex body of the Baptist family in Arunachal Pradesh with 19 member associations and represented by more than 26 tribes of the state.
In his keynote address delivered during the opening ceremony by Toko Kach, President, ABCC stressed on the motto of the council –Witness, Service, Unity. He exhorted every members of the council to practically live out their commitment for the welfare of the state.

Lifter gives Arunachal golden start in NE games

ITANAGAR, Apr 8: Lifter Tinchap Wangcho gave Arunachal Pradesh a perfect start by winning a gold medal on the opening day of the 27th North East Games, which began at Khuman Lampak Stadium, Imphal today afternoon. Tinchap won the medal in Men’s 56 kg category, informed Sports and Youth Affairs Joint Director Tadar Apa.
Anuing Wangsu bagged the second medal for the state by finishing third in the 1500 mt race. She became the first Arunachalee athlete to win a medal in track and field event in NE Games, when she won a bronze in 500 mt race in previous edition of the Games at Aizawl, Mizoram last year. The APLS' monthly literary meet, usually held on every second Sunday of month but was preponed as scheduled date coincides with Rongali Bihu festivities, this time, had witnessed a modest participation.
Rindo Pertin, one of the junior members of APLS, read out his story titled "First Impression is the Last Impression", drawing appreciation from renowned writer Thongchi, who gave some important tips to the budding writer to make further improvement.
West Siang women come up for cause of rape victim
AALO, Apr 8: The members from West Siang Women’s Welfare Society, Aalo branch visited Nyorak village recently to know the ground reality of the incident of rape of a minor girl at Nyorak village in the evening of March 26.
According to information gathered by the women group during their visit to the village, it was revealed that the accused is a habitual offender and even fined in local Keba for committing such offence in the past. Expressing their deep anguish over heinous crime inflicted on such a minor girl, the women wing have personally approached and lodged written complaint with District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police to handle such heinous crime. It also appealed them not to grant bail plea of the accused till the investigating process is over.
They advocated for a deterrent and exemplary punishment to the culprit. DIPRO

Police and their woes
Dear Editor,
Through the column of your daily I would like to highlight the poor condition of police personnel in capital complex. Recently I was with police personals regarding some criminal case which took place at Polo colony, Naharlagun. We were on the way to Polo colony and suddenly the police gypsy stopped in between road and driver repeatedly tried to start it. I joked with a police officer saying, “AREE YAR POLICE KA GADDI START JALDI NAHI HONE SE TO GUNEHGAR BAG JAYEGA”. Then an SI told me that PETROL KHATAM HO GAYA ISLEYE START BANDH HO GAYA HOGA. HUM LOG KO SIRF 5 (five) LITRES PETROL PER DAY MILTA HAI. After knowing the facts, I was shocked and felt bad for the police officers. Most of the government vehicles are used by officers for vegetable marketing at Harmuty and for dropping their relatives, children’s at Guwahati and Shillong. They use petrol and diesel allowances for such leisure trip too. But police who are supposed to protect us are only given 5 litre petrol a day. The gypsy vehicle used by police consumes heavy petrol and therefore 5 litres is just not sufficient enough.
Adding to it the condition of police station is also very bad and need urgent up gradation. Further I also got to know that special branch of police do not have single vehicle for official duty work. How can we expect them to carry out duty on foot march? It is one of the reason why state police lacks strong intelligence network and therefore criminals never gets arrested on time.

Landslide
A new technique that can identify catastrophic landslides based on their seismic signals could one day lead to a global system for identifying regions at particular risk from this hazard.
Giant landslides involve millions of tonnes of rock and debris moving downslope at speeds often above 110 miles per hour. Such events are rare, but, when they occur, the loss of life and damage to property can be enormous.

It can also take a long time to confirm individual landslides, particularly when they occur in isolated places.

Applying their technique to historic seismic data that is freely available online, the pair confirmed several known giant landslides and identified others that were previously unverified.
One of the results independently confirmed anecdotal reports that a landslide had struck a remote village in northern Pakistan on 4 January 2010.
One current limitation of the technique is that it overdetects, generating about ten false positives for every genuine landslide. As a result, seismic signals must be verified against visual evidence of landslides on satellite images.
